MILWAUKEE — 1:30pm exactly and the pace boats lead out
the 20 race boats in three rows. The green flag drops. Throttles slammed
down, drives trimmed up. The boats race down at full tilt towards turn
1 and turn 2, each 90 degree corners and just 50 meters in front of the
thousands of spectators lining the harbor walls. The red speed demon #8
Spiderman, neck and neck with the red #7 Lucas Oil Scarab — the rest of
the pack breathing hard down their transoms as they swing into the
first corner. Spiderman to the outside, Lucas Oil taking the inside lane.
Spiderman (Lance Henrickson and Todd Welling) apexed turn 2, rub-rail
to rub-rail with Lucas Oil (Craig Archer and Nigel Hook).
The flat conditions mean all out speed. The two red race boats follow
the synchronized pattern through the first few laps with Lucas Oil just
shadowing Spiderman. As the back pack traffic were encountered the water
inside the breakwater was getting vigorously stirred and the race boats
were beginning to dance more across the top with no noticeable affect
on speed. In third place, the red #193 Team Donzi (Doug Valentine
and Lee Murray) chased hard right in their wakes with a pack of 8 other
Super Vees not more than a few boat lengths back.
Lap 5 and Spiderman dies; the hard fast corners took their toll on the
Bravo drives. The red #7 Lucas Oil Scarab takes the lead with red Team
Donzi on its tail. Some awesome cornering narrows the gap. Next
lap, navigating through back traffic, the Team Donzi slides down the inside
lane on turn 5 and takes the lead. The Lucas Oil Scarab battles for position
corner after corner, with the two read boats leading the class.
Close racing like this is only one-upped when you have some spectacular
spinouts. Lucas Oil Scarab complied — creating a huge plume of spray between
turn 4 and 5.
"We were trying to get by the slower boats
on the track and in the Super Vee you can't afford to give up one second," commented
Nigel Hook, Captain of the Lucas Oil Scarab. "We went in
the corner fast and tight like you have to, but we hit some terrible wakes
and we just spun — 720 degrees and kept going!"
By the time they reached the other end of the track, all that fountain
of water
had played havoc with electronics and they were left with only one engine
running right. The red #193 Team Donzi went on flawlessly to retain
the lead and take checkered flag, while the. #7 Lucas Oil Scarab captured
7th place points.
